Light sources from Richard Wolf

Light sources based on different technologies, power classes and equipment versions are supplied as a basic element in endoscopic imaging.
Richard Wolf supplies comprehensive solutions to meet individual requirements in medical applications with its selection of LED and xenon light sources.

The product range includes simple manual light sources, as well as high-end systems with dialog function for fully automated control of luminous intensity, and special systems for early recognition of tumors. This might be for purposes of Diagnostic Autofluorescence Endoscopy (DAFE) of cancerous changes in the bronchial region or for Photodynamic Diagnostics (PDD) in bladder tumors.

ENDOLIGHT LED light sources offer many benefits for users: LED light sources have a very long life time and they virtually never need replacing. The LED lamps and modules are very efficient, i.e. power consumption is low and very little heat is generated in the device.

These new light sources from Richard Wolf are virtually inaudible. They are the quietest on the market. This feature makes an important contribution to improved working conditions in the operating room. Furthermore, all devices have a glare shield if the light cable is not plugged in. The light color of the ENDOLIGHT LED light sources is very constant and similar to the light generated by xenon lamps, i.e. also suitable for new, digital endoscopic cameras. This LED technology is a suitable replacement for the highest performance class "300-Watt Xenon".

Powerful 300 watt xenon light sources are particularly quiet and have a side door for easy replacement of the xenon module. The high color temperature (similar to daylight, bluish light) of xenon light is also ideal for new, digital endoscopic cameras. ENDOLIGHT xenon light sources all have a glare shield if the light cable is not plugged in and various additional safety features.

dialog light control
dialog light control is a unique feature of the ENDOLIGHT light sources in conjunction with an ENDOCAM Logic HD camera. The camera controls the light volume of the light source fully automatically in dialog mode. This always gives users optimum image quality while at the same time providing maximum protection for patients and equipment.

Multi-use socket
Richard Wolf supplies ENDOLIGHT light sources with the option of a user-friendly multi-use socket for use with light cables from other manufacturers.

Light cables
Using the correct light cable plays a key role in the visualization system. Optimum light transmission requires optimum adaptation of light cables and endoscope. The light cable must be matched to the endoscope.

New, flexible light cables
In addition to the light cables that are manufactured in the standard procedure by bonding the light fibers, there are also high-temperature versions with an extended service life. This version is called "fusion" (fused together). The optical input site on the projector side is compressed and fused to form a homogeneous glass surface. In addition, these light cables can be exposed to higher quantities of light and therefore have higher temperature ratings than standard light cables. The service life is significantly extended.

Identification of the diameter
The fiber-bundle diameter is identified by a color ring on the light cable and endoscope. The new identification is intended to avoid errors in matching up components. The color ring indicates at a glance whether or not the fiber-bundle diameter of the light cable fits the endoscope.

Unequal diameters that do not match have two hazards:
1. Inadequate amount of light in the endoscope (diameter of the light cable is too small)
2. Heating of the light input on the endoscope (diameter of the light cable is too big)

If the light cable is not a perfect mechanical fit, the image result deteriorates accordingly. A worn or incorrect light cable can reduce the overall brightness of the system by more than 90%!

Special fluid light cables are supplied for applications in fluorescence diagnostics (DAFE, PDD).
