Surgery

Surgery is dealing with the diagnosis and therapy of diseases and injuries as a result of a direct impact on the body. The term surgery originally comes from the ancient greek words for hand and work. The litteral translation of surgeon therefore is "hand worker".
The main objective of surgery is restoring wholly or in part the natural functions of the human body. If this is not possible, surgery tries to restore the previous functions as far as possible using implants.
Surgery comprises many individual disciplines. In addition to general surgery, the field of surgery comprises further specialist areas such as:

  • Emergency/trauma surgery
  • orthopedics
  • pediatric surgery
  • plastic and esthetic surgery
  • vascular surgery
  • thoracic surgery
  • visceral surgery
  • heart surgery
  • neurosurgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery MIS

In clinics as well as in practices, the future belongs to endoscopic or minimally invasive surgery. As it is gentle on the patients, user-friendly and cost-saving, minimally invasive surgery is the adequate solution in health care today.
In collaboration with leading sorgeons, Richard Wolf develops innovative endoscopy systems by always thinking one step ahead. From classical laparoscopic and thoracoscopic applications to the requirements of plastical surgery.

Endoscopic Surgery

In endoscopic surgery, and especially in laparoscopic surgery, the inner organs of the abdominal cavity and thorax are diagnosed and treated. The examinations are carried out via an endoscopic system that is placed via one or several trocars. A xenon light source illuminates the operating area via the endoscope. For surgical intervention today, high-definition video cameras are used. This provides more reliable information than non-invasive preexamination, such as ultrasound or X-ray control.
The corresponding working instruments are inserted into the abdomen under view through trocars which in most cases measure 5 mm.
Especially for surgical indications the endoscopic procedure guarantees maximum reliability in image interpretation, thus minimizing the risk of complications.
The use of endoscopy in surgery allows a correct diagnosis and therapy in the least aggressive way.

Advantages of endoscopic surgery are:

  • Reduced risk for the personel
  • Fewer postoperative compliucations
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Fewer days in hospital
  • Shorter rehabilitation time
  • Improved cosmetic results

As endoscopic surgery means reduced traumatization, the patient's blood loss is also reduced. Fewer so-called adhesions occur. The cosmetic results after endoscopic interventions are clearly better than after conventional surgery.
All the aforementioned properties and advantages make endoscopic surgery – if recommended and possible – the preferred method for surgical interventions.
