Lateral thinking round corners … New articulated instruments make full-endoscopic spinal surgery easier

A key advantage of full-endoscopic surgical procedures for the spinal column compared with visualization using a microscope is the possibility of being able to look “round the corner” using an articulated endoscope through a very small access port directly at the operating site. This allows the visualization area within the body to be significantly enlarged.
It is also essential to be able to reach the visualized structures with appropriate instruments, in order to make effective use of this advantage during surgical intervention. This is why the new TIPCONTROL instrument line has been developed at Richard Wolf.
A new articulated abrader has been designed following development of an articulated bipolar radio-frequency electrode and an actively articulated grasping forceps. This abrader allows the surgeon to carry out effective resection of bones to enlarge the intervertebral foramina when using the transforaminal access port and parts of the facets and laminae when using the interlaminar endoscopic access through the working channel of the endoscope. This permits the indication spectrum to be significantly expanded using this full-endoscopic mode of operation.
