World First for 30 Watt Desktop Laser

Medical instrument company Richard Wolf presents two new holmium lasers that have been recently developed at the German Urologists’ Conference

Knittlingen, September 2011 – More compact and more powerful – this trend in medical technology continues to be a top priority in the development of lasers. Medical instrument manufacturer Richard Wolf will therefore present the Desktop Laser from the “MegaPulse 30+” Series at the German Urologists’ Conference held in Hamburg in mid-September. This is a World First in its class and provides the attending surgeon with power up to 30 watts. The newly developed Mini-Tower Holmium Laser comes from the same series and this instrument is also being presented at the conference for the first time.
“The major advantages of these new developments compared with similar products are the extremely large energy range that can be individually adjusted between 400 and 3500 millijoules and the frequency range of three to as high as 25 hertz. This power range gives users the ability to select energy and frequency values even more precisely and therefore carry out efficient and time-saving stone therapy throughout the urinary tract,” according to Stefan Gillé, responsible for urology products at Richard Wolf. Therapies also include the “stone dusting” procedure where the stone is effectively disintegrated into fine particles and sucked out through the working channel at the same time. No auxiliary instrument set is necessary to recover the fragments.
The two new “MegaPulse 30+” Lasers have three different user modes: lithotripsy, ablation and coagulation. Apart from the compact design, performance and the option for individual adjustment of optimum energy and frequency values, a top priority at Richard Wolf during the development stage was to achieve a higher level of user comfort. Appropriate pre-sets are already installed in the 30 watt lasers so that users can store their personal adjustments and start treatment each time with minimal delay. However, these pre-sets can be changed individually by users at any time. Other advantages intended to facilitate easy operation of the laser are the large touchscreen display with night design, intuitive menu navigation and automatic fiber identification.
Apart from urology, the 30 watt laser can also be used in the areas of surgery, ENT, gynecology, arthroscopy, gastroenterology and spinal surgery.
