Knittlingen in September 2009 – Endoscopy lives from images. The higher the quality of the images, the better the care for patients. The camera is a key element in the endoscopic image chain. Richard Wolf – one of the world’s leading suppliers of endoscopes and endoscopic systems – delivers maximum image quality for the operating room with the HDTV ENDOCAM® 5550.
The camera offers maximum possible resolution with 1920 x 1080 pixels and generates true-to-life images with appropriate widescreen LCD monitors that can be displayed in 16:9 format in the operating room. The progressive scan rate 1080p is used for this purpose. This standard  exceeds even the highest official HDTV Broadcast standard 1080i. The 1080p signal has a key advantage over the 1080i signal: The progressive signal (full image) is supplied directly to the LCD monitor without having to carry out full-image management that reduces quality. This provides pin-sharp images without any flicker even with fast movements and facilitates permits fatigue-free operations.
Overall, the system of the HDTV ENDOCAM® 5550 offers an image quality that is normally only  seen at the cinema. The HD endoscope, the HDTV camera head, the digital control unit and the LCD monitor operate together as an integrated system to deliver this quality. They guarantee sharpness for detail, depth of definition and color brilliance for endoscopic images. Even the most subtle details are displayed naturally and three-dimensionally. This in turn gives surgeon and patient a tangible gain in safety for endoscopic diagnosis and therapy.
However, the system is not simply about impressive image quality. Loss-free documentation and signal forwarding of endoscopic HDTV images is secured by the only professional standard HDSDI. This permits live broadcasting to neighboring rooms or via satellite transmission without conversion. The HD camera head is ergonomically shaped and fully autoclavable. The camera is operated using a digital controller where white balance can be carried out quickly and easily, image brightness can be set and the preset selection can be implemented. Users have a choice between four pre-selected surgery type presets and four programmable user presets.


Alongside HDTV, Richard Wolf is the only endoscopy manufacturer to support both high-definition formats that are available for endoscopic applications, i.e. also available is Medical HD in image format 5:4 with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. For this the company offers the HD ENDOCAM® 5509.
